Today's Scenario

You hand out your email address in a forum, e-shop, subscription list, web site, etc.
As the spammers use your voluntarily disclosed address to flood you with junk mail, you try to block them with spam filters or public blacklists.
You continually have to review your junk mail folder to check for real mails, or you accept to lose legitimate emails as a consequence of "false positive" detection.
You must admit that it is not a very efficient approach. There is a much better solution: NEVER give your real email address. Use Aliases instead. Use ShieldedMail services!

Use ShieldedMail

ShieldedMail is the ultimate technology to protect your online privacy and to get rid of spam. ShieldedMail is a protection layer between the Internet world and you email account: you can send, receive and reply to emails without disclosing your true address. When you come across a web site that asks your email address, just give an Alias. You can create as many Aliases as you need!
Traditional anti-spam techniques attempt to block junk mail sent to publicly available email addresses on the web - in forums, mailing lists, e-shops, web sites, etc. These addresses are harvested by spammers or stolen.
ShieldedMail solves the problem at the source by hiding real addresses behind disposable addresses that can be created and closed on request.

Key Benefits

Email anonymity. Your real email address is always hidden.
Can be used to send and receive emails.
Easy to use, efficient, flexible, and cheaper than a spam filter.
Works for text spam and image spam.
Anti-Virus Protection. All emails that are forwarded through our service are automatically scanned. Infected emails are deleted.
No software to setup, maintain, or configure. No change to your system. ShieldedMail is a service that runs entirely on our servers.
Supports all operating systems (Windows, Linux, Mac, etc.), all email clients (Outlook, Pegasus, Eudora, Thunderbird, etc.), all email servers, all Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, Opera, etc.).
Uses a sidestep strategy against spam, no "brute force" technique. You can avoid spam instead of trying to block it.
Does not rely on email content, therefore no way for the spammers to get around by changing the content of their messages.
Any kind of email can be stopped temporarily or permanently, not only spam.
No restriction on the number of Aliases or Target Addresses you can use.
Banned messages will be rejected before reaching your email inbox. You save time, disk space and network resources.
Better protection against "phishing". Phishing attacks use spoofed emails to fool recipients into divulging personal financial data such as credit card numbers, account usernames and passwords, etc. If you never use your real email address, "phishers" can only reach you through Aliases. This makes it much easier for you to detect such attacks.
Email change is no longer a problem. Instead of notifying all your contacts, just update the Aliases' Target Address. Your email will be routed to the new address. Immediately!
Optional private domains. You can use your own domain name(s) in addition to the ShieldedMail standard domain names.
"Friend" Aliases are fully supported.
"Read Notification/Confirmation" flags are automatically removed. These flags are often used by spammers to be automatically notified when a user reads a message. Many users forget to turn off the auto-notification option in their email programs.

How can ShieldedMail help against "Phishing"

Phishing is a high-tech scam that uses spam or pop-up messages to deceive you into disclosing your credit card numbers, bank account information, passwords, or other sensitive information.

Phishers generally send an email that claims to be from a business or organization that you deal with - for example, your Internet service provider, bank, insurance, or even a government agency. The message usually says that you need to "update" or "validate" your personal or account information. The message directs you to a Web site that looks just like a legitimate organization's site, but it is not. The purpose of the bogus site? To trick you into divulging your personal information so the operators can steal your identity and run up bills or commit crimes in your name.

Using ShieldedMail and never disclosing your real email address will give you a reasonable protection against phishing.

The nice thing with ShieldedMail is that you can use dedicated email addresses - Aliases - to communicate with well-identified contacts. Let us take an example:
  • You order products from www.cool-eshop.biz. You consequently use the "one contact - one Alias" strategy, so you give them a new Alias as contact address.
  • Weeks later, you receive an email at this one Alias from your bank asking you to click a link and update your account information.

Since this Alias has been exclusively given to the e-shop, it is strictly impossible for the bank to use this address to communicate with you! Your conclusion? This e-shop sells customer addresses to phishers (and probably spammers). This email is a scam!

Sender Verification with SPF (Sender Policy Framework)

The standard email system allows anyone to forge anyone else's email address. This means Joe could send anyone a message claiming to be from Mike by forging the "from" address in the email header. SPF allows email servers to easily distinguish forged domains from real domains. SPF tells the "receiving" mail server which servers - in fact which IP addresses - are allowed to send email from a given domain. So, if a spammer/hacker/phisher tries to send out email with a forged header using a faked domain name, the receiving server will be alerted.

Let us take an example:
Suppose a phisher forges an ABCBank.com email address to obtain sensitive information about your account. He/she connects from somewhere other than ABCBank.com and sends you a message containing MAIL FROM: support@ABCBank.com. When the ShieldedMail service receives the message, a request is sent to the ABCBank.com server to verify that the sender's IP address - which cannot be forged - is allowed to send email. If the answer is NO, it is a forgery. The sender is probably a phisher.

Who Can Use ShieldedMail

ShieldedMail for Personal Use
Avoiding spam is so easy! Use an Alias for each new contact. If you receive spam, close or deactivate the Alias. That's it!

ShieldedMail for the Enterprise
As a company, you will probably want your own domain name(s). Nobody will even notice that you use ShieldedMail services!
Implementing ShieldedMail for the Enterprise is straightforward:
Use Aliases on your web site instead of real email addresses. If you get spam, recycle the Alias - the Recycle option is explained later.
Update your web site with new Aliases on a regular basis (3-12 months).
For more protection, activate the "positive keywords" filter and request new contacts to enter a given keyword in the message subject (for instance "SUPPORT-REQUEST" or "ENQUIRY").
When applicable, use Aliases instead of real email addresses. This can save you a lot of money if you have a per-seat email server license.

A Word of Caution

According to several web sites maintained by anti-spam activists, the primary function of an anti-spam system is the merciless destruction of any unsollicited or unknown message reaching your inbox. Losing valid emails seems to be no more than collateral damage. Unsollicited messages are not always spam. Spam is certainly annoying and time-consuming, but losing legitimate email can become a serious problem, especially in a professional environment. This is a rule we should never forget when taking anti-spam measures.
